Online PhD Degree Programs – Andrews University

Andrews University is a faith-based educational institution that was founded by Seventh Day Adventist Church in 1874 in order to provide members of the church with the opportunity to earn a higher education without being exposed to the secular culture of regular colleges and universities. Andrews is composed of six colleges (Arts and Sciences, Architecture, Education, Business, Technology and Graduate Studies) which offer 130 undergraduate and 70 graduate degrees, as well as online PhD degree programs. Andrews also has a Theological Seminary which prepares ministers to serve in the Church by offering various degrees such as a three-year Master of Divinity program and two-year Masters in Pastoral Ministry and Youth Ministry programs.
Andrews’ online PhD degree programs are Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Administration and Doctor of Education (EdD) degrees under its School of Education, which are intended to allow Church members to hone their leadership skills online without having to attend regular on-campus classes. The online doctorate programs involve both coursework and the preparation of a dissertation, which they must successfully defend. To qualify for these programs, the prospective candidate must have at least a Master’s degree, five years or more work experience in a leadership position in the ministry, current employment in a leadership position and a successful interview with members of the Leadership faculty of the University.
However, there are residency requirements which require online PhD degree programs candidates to attend an on-campus orientation at the start of their studies, as well as three-day conventions in successive years. Candidates must also work with an adviser and network with a national or international Church group once a month for support.
