Online PhD Degree Programs – Accreditation of Universities in Egypt
Egypt is seeking to create a more globally competitive higher education system, in order to ensure that qualifications earned by graduates of the institution, including those earned through online PhD degrees, will be recognized employers and institutes of higher education abroad. At present, higher education in the country is mainly delivered through the public university and non-university technical institutes and is free, with only minimal fees charged to students. However, there is also a flourishing private higher education system consisting of profit-oriented colleges and universities, including some which offer part-time postgraduate programs through distance learning or online PhD degree programs.
The overall policy direction of the country’s higher education system is set by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Supreme Council of Universities. The Ministry supervises the entire post-secondary educational system through policy formulation, planning and quality control, while the SCU develops policies for university education and scientific research as well as performing other functions such as setting the maximum number of students that can be admitted per faculty in each university.
Ensuring the quality standards of the HEIs themselves is the responsibility of the National Quality Assurance and Accreditation Committee (NQAAC), which is implementing an accreditation system involving the development of internal quality standards and external peer-review evaluation through on-site visits. To ensure that universities’ internal standards will be equivalent to national and international standards, the Agency is developing national academic standards that correspond to global benchmarks. Colleges and universities that meet accreditation guidelines will be included in a published register, which can be accessed by students seeking schools from which to take online PhD degrees.
