Getting Results for Your PhD Dissertation : Major or Minor Corrections

PhD Programs and Getting Results for Your PhD Dissertation

Viva voce or simply viva is regarded an oral examination specifically designed to evaluate the subject knowledge and research of your PhD. Generally, viva is performed by an external examiner. This part of most PhD Programs involve a discussion of the topics discussed as well as the conclusions contained in your research, though its format may vary from university to university.

The result of your viva voce usually takes some time as examiners still have to discuss themselves before they will make a decision. There are also instances when it is given right after your defense. Its outcome is not really clearly pass or fail. Most often, the outcomes of your viva may be passed with no minor or major changes in it, subjected to major amendments, or subjected to minor revisions for its completion. However, it is likely unusual to pass viva without any changes since nearly all doctoral candidates are advised to make some revisions on their work. But this does not mean that you are a failure in your research work. This only gives you an opportunity to improve your work by following the comments and instructions set out by the examiners, experts in your chosen field of study. It will also encourage you to enhance your work for the future.

PhD Programs – Major and Minor Revisions

With cases of major and minor revisions, most postgraduate students consider viva as the end of their doctoral degree journey. But this does have solutions. You can manage the revisions and corrections and get changes to your dissertation done. Have some time off following your viva to recover and refocus on your goals. Think over the reasons why you are pursuing your PhD and make use of them so that you will be motivated in the final stages of your paper. Have another perspective for your dissertation, one which makes you feel you may have greater chances of getting intact of the things you need and have to know. You may find it beneficial when you will have someone to talk to, one who may help you in organizing and managing your time to get all the necessary revisions done. You may also ask for a counseling service from someone who knows about the research topic you are doing.

PhD Programs – Corrections and Guidance

Make certain that have the list of the corrections from the examiners since these will serve as your guide on what you have to do next and make all of them satisfactorily. Arrange an appointment with your supervisor to discuss each of the corrections and get his/her confirmation to give you feedback on the changes. Never hesitate to ask the examiners or your supervisor on what you have to do or what they want the changes should be. Draw a realistic timetable in making the changes by taking into account outside pressures such as going back home, funding ending, family commitments, and finding a job. Start making the corrections done not too long after your viva and stay focused.

Once you’re done with all the corrections, let them be checked by your supervisor and resubmit your thesis for reexamination. In Most PhD Programs, this part will now be the culmination of PhD program. Best of luck!
