Online PhD Degree Programs – Open Universiteit Nederland

The Open Universiteit Nederland or Open University Netherland is that country’s youngest institute of higher education, which is appropriately called as it offers university-level courses through distance education using advanced online technology. It was founded in 1984 and has study centers in Flanders and the Netherlands. It has six colleges (Information Technology, Cultural Studies, Management Science, Natural Sciences, Psychology and Legal Studies) as well as a School of Education and a teaching institute, the Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies. The Open University also offers online PhD degree programs through the ICO PhD Programme.
To qualify for online PhD degree programs offered by the ICO PhD Programme, prospective students need to have either a regular master’s or a research master’s degree. They should also have an outstanding academic record and their research proposal must have been approved by the scientific committee of the ICO. The doctoral candidate should also be able to devote at least two-and-a-half years to perform research for their doctorate thesis, including time devoted to coursework and meetings with academic advisers. Depending on the degree, research for the thesis should take a minimum of three years and a maximum of six years.
Students enrolled in online PhD programs of the ICO also need to take compulsory courses such as an Introductory Course, two Master Classes related to ICO research themes (but they may not necessarily be related to the subject of the student’s research), at least one Master Class in research methodology and an international summer or winter school course. PhD candidates will also develop with their advisers an education and supervision plan that will dictate their progress in the program.
