The aim of the UK’s Open University (OU) is to offer everyone the chance to earn a degree, regardless of their past academic achievements. In line with this, the Open University has an ‘open policy’ for its undergraduate courses, meaning there are no entry requirements; postgraduate programs, however, or courses aimed at workers in specific professions, do have entry requirements depending on the specific course. The Open University was established in 1969 and was the first university in the world to successfully use distance-learning modalities. It has several faculties and a Business School, which is the largest producer of MBA graduates in Britain.
Professionals in education and related fields can avail of Doctorate of Education (Ed.D) online PhD UK programs under the Open University’s Centre for Research in Education and Educational Technology or CREET. The Ed.D online PhD UK program takes around three and a half years to complete, on a part-time basis, with the first year being devoted to a review of the available literature, and an initial research study, followed by supervised and supported research for the student’s 50,000 word doctoral thesis.
The course will be conducted through e-mail with supervisors and other students, electronic seminars and online access to electronic journals and bibliographic databases. Students, however, are required to attend a residential study weekend in their first year, followed by Day School in the second year and another residential weekend in the third year. Entry criteria for this online PhD UK program require applicants to have an undergraduate degree or a Master’s Degree in Education and to have successfully completed a research methods training course.
