The Faculty of Music at the University of Melbourne offers a select group of students the opportunity to gain a music education that will enable them to assume leadership positions in the musical community and to make vital contributions to musicological research while sharpening their performance skills.
The coursework Doctor of Music Arts is a professional degree in music performance, equal in rigor to a PhD but with a focus on continual vocal or instrumental development at the highest professional level. Candidates to DMA online PhD degree programs will undertake advanced studies of musical performance supported by doctoral-level research.
Candidates for the coursework DMA should have the recognized equivalent of a Master of Music in performance and are normally expected to have completed a Master’s level minor thesis or research project and have taken a Musicological Research Methods subject. They must also prepare a 60-minute audition at the appropriate performance level and submit a complete list of their planned repertoire that includes chamber and concerto music. DMA online PhD degree programs have a research and a performance component, and students’ performances are expected to be of a standard equivalent to that given during a concert. The thesis should be the equivalent of a Masters level in its research and will be presented at a lecture recital; the thesis topic should be related to the student’s performance specializations.
DMA online PhD degree programs graduates are expected to have the ability to conduct original research within the context of specialized knowledge and have highly-developed problem solving abilities. They should also have gained a wide array of advanced transferable skills which they may share with others through teaching positions in the music departments of tertiary institutions.
