Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia (UNED) – Background
Inspired by the UK’s Open University, which offered distance-learning courses to students regardless of their past academic accomplishments, Spain’s state-run Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) was founded in 1972 with the same mission – to provide educational opportunities for all through distance education. It currently has 60 study centers in Spain and 20 abroad, including locations in Sao Paolo, Mexico, Buenos Aires, Brussels, Bern and Paris. It offers Licenciaturas (undergraduate degrees), Diplomaturas (three-year Master’s degrees) and 150 online PhD degree programs, which are conducted in Spanish. The UNED is, however, in the process of updating its doctoral program to one that is compliant with the European Higher Education Area.
Online PhD Degree Programs at Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia
UNED’s online PhD degree programs are conducted in two phases – the training phase, where the student will take lessons in research methodology, and the research phase during which the student prepares and writes his or her doctoral thesis.

Online PhD Degree Programs – Admission Requirements
General requirements for admission include a Master’s degree or equivalent issued by a European higher education institution or one outside Europe (the decision shall be made by the Rector of UNED). There may also be specific entry requirements depending on the doctorate program the student is interested in. Some programs may also require students to attend on-campus courses, which they can do at any of UNED’s satellite or international study centers. To apply for online PhD degree programs, the student will have to submit a copy of their academic degree, an official transcript of records, a short essay on the research they intend to conduct which should include the areas they intend to pursue and their comprehensive and updated resume or curriculum vitae.
