PhD Scholarships – University of Canterbury New Zealand

University of Canterbury is one of the earliest universities in New Zealand. It has been imparting education to students in various disciplines since 1873. The University is now known for its world leading research and inspirational teaching. It is ranked among the top 250 universities of the world. Research is an integral part of the University and hence it has cutting-edge research facilities for the students. The University has 20 research centers and partners with some of the best research labs in New Zealand. Each year a number of students from all over the world enroll in its research programs. The university offers various PhD scholarships to its students to encourage them to participate and contribute to the world class research.
The University of Canterbury spends over $13.5 million each year in scholarships. There are a number of PhD scholarships for international students planning to study or currently studying at the University. A wide range of scholarships is available in all the departments and colleges of the University. Students may apply online for the scholarships. Most scholarships are awarded on the basis of written application and the mentor’s or referee’s reports. The selection process takes 6-8 weeks and the selected candidates receive notification upon completion of the process. The PhD scholarships involve a round of interview to assess the capabilities of the students.

- University of Canterbury International Doctoral Scholarships – Only international students are eligible to receive the award. The value of the award is $25000 for three years. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 15th May 2012. The scholarship is available in all disciplines.
- Van Der Veer Institute Doctoral Scholarships – Students undertaking a research project in The Van Der Veer Institute for Parkinson’s and Brain research is eligible to receive this scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2008 to support research at the Institute. There are two scholarships available for both the domestic and the international students. The value of the scholarship is $25000 plus the tuition fees. It is awarded for 3 years. The last date to submit the application is 15th May 2012. The decision to select the students is made by the Post Graduate Research committee.
- University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarships – domestic students, residents of New Zealand and international students are eligible for the scholarships. The students must have completed the education requirement to enroll in the doctoral program in the University. The students already enrolled in the PhD program may also apply for the scholarship. There are two rounds of admission to the scholarship program and the last date is 15th May 2012 and 15th October 2012. The scholarship covers the tuition fee and an annual stipend of $20000 for three years.
- University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarships for Students with Disabilities –This scholarship was established in 1999 to support and encourage bright students with significant disabilities. The student applying for this scholarship must have significant disability affecting his studies. The scholarship covers the tuition fee and an annual stipend of $20000 for 4 years. The last date to apply is 15th October 2012. It is open to domestic as well as international students enrolling in a PhD program in any discipline.
- NZi3 PhD scholarships – this scholarship is in association with the ICT Innovation Institute to encourage research in the field of ICT. The scholarships were established in 2007. The value of the scholarship is $30000 per annum which includes the tuition fees for 3 years. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 21st November 2012.
- Chemical and Process Engineering PhD scholarship –This scholarship is for students enrolling in the Chemical and Process Engineering subject. The students undertaking research in project title “Desulphurization of Fuel using advanced oxidation process” are eligible to apply for the scholarship. The value of the scholarship is $25000 per annum for 3 years. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 30th November 2012. The scholarship is open for domestic as well as international students.
- Evans Fund – students enrolling in a PhD program in chemistry are eligible to receive grants from the Evans Fund. The head of the chemistry department will recommend students to receive the grant. The value of the grant is $1000. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 30th September 2012. This scholarship is specifically for students facing financial hardships. It is open for both domestic and international students.
- Keith Laugesen Scholarship – Students enrolled in the College of Science and College of Engineering is eligible for the scholarship. This scholarship is a gift from the Keith and Laugesen Charitable trust. It is offered every third year. The value of the scholarship is $24500 per annum for three years. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 15th October 2012. It is open for all the domestic and international students of the University.
- Sir Don Beaven Doctoral Scholarship –Students enrolled in the Communication Disorders Department and Health Sciences Center of the University may apply for this scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2011. The value of the scholarship is $21000 plus tuition fees per annum for 3 years. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 15th October 2012.
- Ethel Rose Overton Scholarships – students enrolled in full-time Doctoral program at the University Of Canterbury School Of Fine Arts are eligible for the scholarship. The value of the scholarship is $10000 per annum for 3 years. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 1st November 2012. The scholarship is open for domestic and international students.
- T. W. Adams scholarship in Forestry – The scholarship is open to domestic and international students who enroll for PhD in forestry. The value of the scholarship is $25000 per annum for 2 years. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 1st November 2012.
- UC Bluefern HPC PhD Scholarships– The scholarship is for students enrolled in the College of Science and College of Engineering. The scholarship covers tuition fee, annual stipend of $30000 and $5000 international travel allowance for 3 years. It is open for domestic and international students. The applications are invited all round the year for the scholarship. The two funded projects are:
- Understanding enzyme inhibition by tracking molecular motion using computational studies.
- Qualifying the importance of individual species in ecological networks.
- NZi3 Industry PhD Scholarships – these scholarships were started in 2011 with an aim to encourage research in ICT in partnership with a company. Students enrolled in the College of Engineering are eligible for the scholarships. The value of the scholarship is $20000 per annum plus tuition fees for 3 years. The applications are invited from the domestic and international students till the positions are filled.
The offers for the scholarships will be made in the June 2012 for scholarships with last date as 15th May 2012 and for scholarships with last date in October and November the offers will be made in the last week of December 2012. Students applying for more than one scholarship are advised to submit separate application for each scholarship. The decision will be made by the Post Graduate research Committee of the University on the basis of proposal of research submitted and the academic background of the student.
