PhD Scholarships -University of Auckland, New Zealand

The University of Auckland, New Zealand has been contributing towards the education since 1883. It understands the importance of research-led teaching and uses it extensively. The University aims to support its research activities by various external and internal sources. Not only the doctoral students but postgraduate and undergraduate students are also encouraged to participate in the research activities. The University supports various research centers in the nation. The University provides opportunities of research in traditional discipline as well as developing cross-disciplinary subjects. The University offers PhD scholarship programs to its students. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence.

Each year the University awards 140 PhD scholarships to its students enrolled in the Doctoral program. The scholarships are given for three years and in some cases a 6 month extension is also given. The various scholarship programs for which students can apply are as follows:

1. University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship- these scholarships started in 2011 with an intention to support domestic and international students alike. The value of the scholarship is $25000 annually with compulsory annual doctoral fees. The scholarship is available in different discipline and the closing date for applying varies by subject area. The selection of the students is made by the University of Auckland council on the recommendation of Scholarship sub-committee and education committee. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit, research proposal submitted and endorsement of the supervisor.

2. University of Auckland Commonwealth Scholarship-one scholarship annually is awarded to the student of Canada or the United Kingdom. The value of the scholarship is $25000. The scholarship is awarded for 36 months. Students wishing to apply for this scholarship will have to apply through his home country.

3. University of Auckland Fullbright Scholarship-this scholarship was initiated by the University in 1995. Three scholarships are awarded annually. The value of the scholarship is $25000 plus research/tuition fees. The scholarship is tenable by students from US. No application is required for these scholarships.

Besides the above mentioned PhD scholarships there are other scholarships also. Some of the PhD scholarships for the current academic year are:

1. University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral scholarships- the closing date is 1st November 2012. The value of the scholarship is $25000 plus fees. The scholarship is available for domestic students only.

2. University of Auckland Senior Health Research Doctoral Scholarship- three scholarships are awarded each year. This award was constituted to attract professionals in health care to study and contribute towards research in this area. The last date to apply is 1st November 2012. The value of the award is $40000 annually plus the compulsory doctoral fees. Citizens and permanent residents of New Zealand may apply for the scholarship.

3. University of Auckland Universitas 21Doctoral Student Mobility scholarships-students enrolled full-time at the University wishing to undertake short term visits and placements at Universitas 21 universities may apply for this scholarship. The university awards 5 scholarships annually. The scholarship covers a three month stipend and flight charges. There is no closing date and the students may apply any time.

4. University of Auckland Universitas offering 21 joint PhD scholarships– international as well as domestic students can avail the scholarship. The last date is variable. The scholarship covers the fees, airfare and an annual stipend of $25000 for three years.

5. Doctoral Completion Awards-these are for students enrolled prior to Januray1 2011. This award was constituted to encourage and support students to prepare their research for submission and publication. The value of the award is up to $6000 and there is no application form for this. Students registered for doctoral degrees and having at least 120 points are eligible for this scholarship.

6. New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarship- International students can apply for this PhD scholarship program. This scholarship is funded by the Government of New Zealand. It covers the full tuition fee, maintenance allowance which is $25000 annually and other allowances like $600 annual health insurance, $2000 travel allowance, $800 book and thesis allowance and $500 one-off establishment allowance. The last date to apply for this scholarship is 15th July 2012.

Various faculties at the University also offer different PhD scholarships for the students. The scholarship programs are open for the current academic year.

1. Faculty Of Arts-

  1. Vista Linda Doctoral Scholarships- the value is $5000 and the last date to apply is 15th October 2012. One scholarship is awarded each year to the students enrolled in the Department of Spanish.
  2. Myra and Eric McCormick scholarship in History- the value of the scholarship is $10000 and the last date to apply is 1st December 2012.
  3. Keith Sinclair Memorial Scholarship- students enrolled in a doctoral program in history may apply for the scholarship. The value of the scholarship is $10000 and the last date to apply is 1st December 2012.
  4. University of Auckland Doctoral scholarship- the last date to apply for this scholarship in the Faculty of Arts is 1st November 2012

2. Business schools-

  1. The ASB Bank and NZ Shareholders Association PhD Scholarships-the scholarship covers the tuition fees and an annual stipend of $30000 per annum. Each year one scholarship is awarded to promote research in the field of corporate governance and capital markets. International as well as domestic students can apply for this scholarship. The last date to apply is 1st of May 2012.
  2. Employers and Manufacturers Doctoral scholarships- the scholarship was started in 2010 with an aim to promote research in NZ family businesses. The employers and manufacturers association fund the scholarship. The value of the scholarship ranges from $15000 to $20000. No application is required for this scholarship. Two scholarships are awarded each year to the students enrolled in the Department of Management and International Business.
  3. The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship- Last date to apply is 1st June 2012

3. National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries

  1. The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship- Last date to apply is 1st November 2012

4. Faculty of Education-

  1. Learning Media Scholarship for Research into Literacy Learning- one scholarship of value $10000 is awarded to a student who is undertaking research in teaching materials and literacy learning. The closing date for submission of application is 30th September 2012.
  2. The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship- the last date to apply is 1st May 2012.

5. Faculty of Engineering-

  1. The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship- the last date to apply is 1st June 2012.

6. Faculty of Law-

  1. The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship- the last date to apply is 1st November 2012.

7. Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences-

  1. Dean’s International Doctoral Scholarships- established in 2011 with an aim to attract international students to pursue research in Medical and Health sciences with the University. The last date to apply is 30th April 2012. The scholarship covers the tuition fee, relocation grant, travel and health insurance an annual stipend of $25000. Three scholarships are to be awarded in the current academic year.
  2. Tinnitus Research Scholarship- one scholarship awarded to the student studying in causes and treatment of tinnitus. The value of the scholarship is $25000 and the closing date to apply is 31st October 2012.
  3. Ralph and Eve Seelye Scholarship in Anaesthesiology- include an annual stipend of $20000. The last date to apply is 23rd November 2012.

8. Faculty of Science-

  1. Comvita Doctoral Scholarship in Environmental Sustainability and Conservation- The value of the scholarship is $16840 and the last date to apply is 31st July 2012. International students can apply for this scholarship. One scholarship is awarded each year.
  2. George Mason/UC Davis/University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship- the George Mason Charitable trust established this scholarship in 2011. The purpose was to strengthen the collaboration between The University of California Davis and the University of Auckland. The scholarship covers an annual stipend of $25000 plus international health insurance. One scholarship is awarded each year to the student who has completed his graduation from the University of California Davis.
  3. The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship- the last date to apply is 1st May 2012.

The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and expression of interest submitted by the students along with the application form. Students can also undertake part-time job along with some of the scholarships.
