With their Online and distance mode of study, university is offering distance PhD in these subjects:

1. Online PhD in Computer Science

If you have an interest in any field of Computer Science or IT technology and you have either an upper second class honours degree or a Masters from a Computer related field, then you will be able to apply for a distance PhD in computer science.  The program can be completed as a full (3 years) or a part-time (in 6 years) course. As a distance PhD program, you are required to keep a constant electronic contact with your supervisory team (Email, Skype, hangouts, Phone etc).

During this program, you will attend the meetings, conferences and seminars. Research papers and presentations will also become part of your PhD. However the final part will be submission of your thesis (between 70,000 and 100,000 words) with last defense.

2. Online PhD in Archaeology or Conservation Studies

The Department of Archaeology at University of York is offering two distance PhD programs:

In the beginning of these programs, you and your supervisor will be required to sign an agreement to set the key elements of this program (Elements about your attendance, supervision arrangements, your research proposal or research plan etc). Like all other distance PhDs at University of York, you will be required to have an annual visit to the University (between 1-2 weeks in late September). Both programs can be completed in 3 to 6 years. The last thesis (90,000 words) will be submitted with the direction of your supervisor and thesis advisory Panel.

To apply for these programs, with your complete application form, you also need a research proposal. This proposal will clearly define your research question and how you will able to do this research? In this proposal, you can also indicate some sources of related data and methods of analysis.

3. Online MPhil and PhD in History of Art

The department of History of art at University of York is offering distance learning MPhil and PhD in History of art. To apply for MPhil, you must need a 1st class graduate degree. To get admission in PhD, you are required a Masters degree from a recognized university. If English is not your first language, you are also required to submit your recent IELTS scores.

The MPhil program can be completed in 2 years (full-time) or 4 years part-time. To complete this program, you will be required to submit a dissertation of 60,000 words.

For your distance PhD, you are required to submit a dissertation of 90,000 words. You will be constantly guided through video conferencing (Skype) and with other electronic media. Please note that access to internet and other electric media is a MUST requirement for this mode of study.

PhD by Publication

Apart from the distance PhD programs, university of York is also offering PhD by Publications. However, it is important to note that this non-traditional Publications program is open only to members of the University staff who have been employed for three years prior to indicating their intention to submit work for the degree. They should also hold at least a first degree in s subject related to their field of research or a relevant master’s degree or other qualification recognized by the University’s Senate, which oversees its academic policy.

Course Outline – PhD by Publication

PhD by Publication University of York Constantine HouseThe work submitted by the candidate for this online PhD UK program should consist of work that has been previously published or already been accepted for publication, such as research monographs and books or papers that have appeared in refereed journals. The student should also produce an integrative chapter that will summarize the work’s aims and results and its research methodology while explaining how it contributes to the development of a particular field of knowledge. After submitting the work, the candidate will undergo an oral examination on the subject of his or her dissertation unless the Board of Governors and examiners agree to dispense with this requirement.
