The University of Adelaide has been one of the country’s most forward-looking educational institutions since its founding in 1872, being the first Australian university to admit women to academic courses and to confer degrees in Science. Testifying to the University’s academic excellence is the fact that among its alumni are 101 Rhodes scholars and five Nobel laureates. It has five campuses scattered throughout the state, with its main campus located in the city centre, as well as one in Singapore.
The University is divided into five colleges, including the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Health Sciences faculty, which offers online PhD degree programs by publication consists of six schools, encompassing dentistry, medicine, medical sciences, pediatrics and reproductive health, population health and psychiatry.

Theses for this type of doctorate program may consist of a portfolio of previously published work or a combination of work that has already been published (or been accepted for publication) and conventional written narrative.
Theses for online PhD degree programs by publication which include articles that have multiple authors must also include a statement clearly defining the contribution of the doctoral candidate, as well as the co-authors, to the final work. Word length of the thesis must not exceed 80,000 words (although appendices, tables, references and bibliographies are not included in the final word count). The submitted work may also consist of a single major publication such as a book.
