The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, based in Louisville, Kentucky, is the flagship seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Baptist denomination in the world. Founded in 1859, it was the first seminary to be established by the SBC, starting out with just six students and a classroom borrowed from another university. As of 2010, it has an enrollment of over 3,000 students and is one of the world’s largest theological seminaries. SBTS consists of the School of Theology, the Billy Graham School of Missions and Evangelism, the School of Church Ministries and Boyce College Undergraduate, and its programs include undergraduate and graduate-level programs, including online PhD degree programs.
Online PhD Degree Programs – Doctor of Education in Leadership
Its online PhD programs are for a Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in Leadership degree which is designed for students who are currently engaged in a full-time ministry position and cannot attend regular on-campus classes. The program is designed to be completed in three years of study and requires the student to enroll in full-time coursework, participate in weekly Internet-based discussion groups and stay in contact with instructors and fellow scholars throughout the program through e-mail. However, students are required to attend on-campus research seminars held thrice a year, and whose schedule can be found on the course website.
Online PhD Degree Programs – Prerequisites
Prerequisites to admission in online PhD degree programs include at least one year of full-time salaried experience in a leadership position in the ministry, a Master of Arts in Christian Education or its academic equivalent and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Prospective students must also have taken the GRE exams and have completed a master’s level course in research statistics.
