Carnegie Project-Education Doctorate (CPED)

By onlinephd |

This article provides information about the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED), which is an effort that aims to enhance the education of interested and qualified students.

This three-year initiative is sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council of Academic Deans in Research Education Institutions with the primary goal of boosting EdD. This inter-institutional project intends to redesign EdD to a more significant and stronger degree for the advanced preparation of clinical faculty and school practitioners, professional staff for the colleges and schools, and academic leaders. It examines new approaches to the professional practice of the subject matter.

The project has involved a consortium of 25 universities and colleges with committed resources for combined work to take a critical test of the doctorate program. Its members expect that graduates should be scholarly practitioners that use inquiry to inform their decisions; are equipped with knowledge, skills and moral imperative in intervening and solving problems associated to the practice; have an ethical obligation and responsibility to engage in critical test and share; and are agents of change in study. It helps prepare doctorate degree educators for the application of suitable and certain practices, professional stewardship, and knowledge development.

The project has developed working principles for professional practice EdD as well as characteristics of professional practice for the graduates. The initial three years of this initiative is focused on research and development to examine, refine, and validate the principles for professional EdD.

The second phase of the project aims to assess the change in the organizational structures of the graduate university or college, disseminate the lessons attained and the best practices for professional practice programs’ design and implementation to other schools, and evaluate the change in learning environments, processes, and patterns of engagement of the faculty and EdD program candidates.

It notes that the California State University or CSU was invited to develop a CSU CPED with the aim to apply for a national CPED framework in making a critical analysis of the educational doctorate programs. The campuses of CSU are expected to analyze a number of basic issues in the discipline such as the determination of signature pedagogies appropriate to their programs, the teaching scholarship, the establishment of “laboratories of practice” that will be used by future practitioners for their experiment and to undertake the “best evidence analyses,” the elements of candidate and program evaluation that care fundamental within the doctorate, and the capstone experiences that allow future practitioners to produce excellent demonstrations of proficiency. Meanwhile, the CSU CPED involves its faculty and students to explore the central highlights of EdD programs especially in Educational Leadership. Its members continue to address fundamental issues concerning the evaluation and examine the problems associated to practice cases.

In general, as its definition suggests, a doctorate is a professional degree referred to a class or group of degrees qualifying the holder to teach in particular field of interest such as business, engineering, public administration, and management.
