The challenge for educators in the 21st century is to create a new education paradigm that takes into account new problems as well as new opportunities brought about by globalization and emerging technological developments. The Cardiff School of Education at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff offers part-time and full-time postgraduate courses that will equip graduates with the knowledge and the professional skills to meet this challenge.
The online PhD UK Professional Doctorate program in Education, which leads to the award of an EdD, is designed for educators who cannot pursue full-time studies but would like to conduct research in the challenges of delivering education in the new millennium. It can be completed in between four to nine years, depending upon the progress of the student.
There are two modes of entry to the online PhD UK EdD program – by being awarded a Master of Research (MRes) from the relevant UWIC program or by proceeding directly to the advanced research component of the program if they already hold a Masters in the appropriate academic field and have completed the required amount of supervised postgraduate work. The course structure includes a taught component that requires attendance at research training modules, work placements that allow the student to apply what they have learned to the appropriate professional setting, and a research phase that requires submission of a doctoral thesis that makes a significant contribution to the practice of business in the candidate’s organization.
Successful exit from the online PhD UK EdD program is upon the submission of the dissertation and a viva voce examination. However, students may also opt to exit with a Master of Research upon completion of the first part of the program and submission of a Master’s thesis and successful oral defense.
