The global population is increasingly becoming urbanized, creating a need for professionals who will be able to meet the challenges of managing traffic and public transport systems in the world’s cities. The Transportation Research Group of the University of Southampton offers a range of full-time and part-time postgraduate research degree programs that allow scholars to conduct research in areas such as urban traffic control, transportation systems, driver behavior and rail transport systems.
The online PhD UK program in Transport Knowledge and Systems Engineering, leading to the award of an EngD, is a four-year program that provides scholars with the technical and business skills, along with personal development competencies, that qualify them to become senior research managers in private industrial companies or government and non-government institutions.
Applicants for the EngD online PhD UK program are required to have a good first or upper second class Honours degree in a relevant field from a UK university or other recognized international institution. Foreign students are also required to provide proof of proficiency in English through high scores in IELTS or TOEFL. Successful candidates are referred to as research engineers and are sponsored by companies with whom they will work on a research project. The first two years of the program will involve the scholar undertaking management and technical subject modules, followed by the submission of a mini-thesis at the end of the second year; the following two years will be spent with the sponsoring organization conducting research towards the submission of a doctoral thesis at the end of the program.
The award of the online PhD UK EngD degree is based on the assessment of the dissertation based on a viva voce defense. In case of the rejection of the dissertation, a Master of Research or Diploma in Engineering Management qualification may still be awarded depending on the student’s performance.
