In 1975 the University of Northampton was known as Nene College of Higher Education Eventually, it changed its name to University College Northampton. In 2005, Northampton finally got its full university status despite the Royal Decree signed by King Henry III which banned the building of universities in Northampton in 1265. Some of the notable personalities who earned their doctoral degrees in the University of Northampton are comedian Hugh Dennis (2008), fashion designer Zandra Rhodes (2007) and film columnist and broadcaster Andrew Collins (2006).
The University of Northampton currently serves around ten thousand students in its two campuses which are the Park Campus and the Avenue Campus. It is also ranked 8th among the cheapest universities in United Kingdom .
The University of Northampton also offers PhD by Published works. A research of a hopeful applicant shall be subjected to a review whether it has been published, exhibited, performed, recorded, screened or broadcasted.
