If you are an education professional who is in mid-career and thinking of shifting to another job or moving to an administrative or policy-making position, then you must upgrade your qualifications by taking a PhD in Education Studies. You can participate in unique joint distance PhD programs from the University of Western Ontario, in collaboration with Lakehead, Brock and Windsor Universities. The doctoral candidate can enroll at any of these universities and take their coursework on a part-time basis using the academic faculties of any of the participating institutions. Once they have successfully concluded their coursework, they are expected to conduct their research on a full-time basis through an on-campus residency at the university in which they enrolled.
PhD in Educational Studies – Entry Requirements
Candidates for joint online PhD programs must have a Master of Arts in Education or Master of Education with an A standing; however, applicants with lower academic qualifications but an outstanding record of professional experience may also be considered. Applicants must also submit a two to three page summary of their proposed area of research in one of the following fields of study – Policy and Leadership, Cognition and Learning and Socio-cultural Contexts of Education. Foreign students who have earned their qualifications from a non-English speaking university must also pass the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a grade of at least 600 or provide equivalent evidence of English proficiency.
The joint PhD in Educational Studies require the candidate, after the completion of coursework, to demonstrate their capacity as scholars through the successful completion of a comprehensive portfolio consisting of the dissertation research proposal and three other tasks before they can begin their dissertation research; they are also expected to defend their portfolio. Candidates are expected to complete the requirements for their degree within a minimum three year period but not to exceed six years.
