Online PhD Degree programs – La Trobe University – Professional Doctorate in Social Work

The School of Social Work and Social Policy at La Trobe University offers professional social workers the opportunity to earn advanced degrees while still fulfilling their professional responsibilities through its online PhD degree programs. The School offers students an education that will help them promote social change for the benefit of the most vulnerable sectors of society.
Doctor of Social Work (DSW) online PhD degree programs are aimed at experienced social workers who would like to undertake research that will address pressing issues in their field, although it is also open to professionals in related disciplines. The duration of the program is eight years when taken on a part-time basis.
Applicants to DSW online PhD degree programs must have the recognized equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree with an Honours grade of at least 2A in social work or a related discipline and possess the necessary professional qualifications. They should also have at least three years of relevant work experience. The program consists of coursework and a research component that requires students to submit either a written thesis of 30,000 to 60,000 words on a topic of relevance to their profession or a research portfolio of published works and an overview essay, which collectively should have the same word count as the thesis option.
In the course of completing DSW online PhD degree programs, doctoral candidates are also required to present doctoral colloquia before their fellow candidates, which will consist of a research proposal and two presentations of the research project in progress. They are required to attend at least 75% of the doctoral colloquia presentations.
