Professional doctorates offered by James Cook University in Queensland, Australia are intended for professionals with substantial work experience who are interested in conducting research that makes a significant contribution to practice in their fields. They are equivalent to a PhD award and may be taken through full-time on-campus courses or online PhD degree programs that students can complete on a part-time basis.
The Professional Doctor of Medical Education (DMedEd) is intended for qualified professionals working in the field of medical education who demonstrate the capacity to conduct independent research at a doctoral level. Duration of DMedEd online PhD degree programs is the equivalent of three years of full-time work.
Qualifications for entry to this online PhD degree programs are a 1 or 2A Honours degree in medicine or health education, or a Masters in a related discipline, and a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience. Successful candidates must enroll in coursework subjects for the first part of the program, followed by a research task which will be documented in a research portfolio. The portfolio will consist of a 50,000-word dissertation, a collection of scholarly and research projects which should total at least 20,000-words, and a reflective essay of 3,000 to 5,000 words describing how the work relates to professional practice in the candidate’s field.
Assessment of this online PhD degree programs are through an examination of the candidate’s portfolio by two or three examiners, at least two of which should not be members of JCU faculty. The DMedEd will be awarded if examiners deem the work to have made a substantial contribution to practice and knowledge in the student’s profession. Candidates may also be required to take further oral or written examinations upon recommendation of the examiners.
