The Professional Doctor of Health Professional Education (DHlthProfEd) is designed for experienced educators specializing in education for health professionals who want to earn an advanced award but whose professional responsibilities prevent them from enrolling in full-time studies. DHlthProfEd online PhD degree programs are offered through the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences and are estimated to take the equivalent of three years full time work to complete.
Applicants to this online PhD degree programs are expected to hold the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree (with Honors class 1 or 2A) in health professional education or a related field, or have a Masters in a health or education-related field. They should also have at least five years of relevant professional experience. The doctorate program comprises a coursework and a research component. At the end of the program, the student will submit a research portfolio consisting of a 50,000-word dissertation, a collection of scholarly works of publishable standard which should total at least 20,000 words and an integrative essay of 3,000 to 5,000 words defining the relationship between the dissertation and the candidate’s professional practice.
Assessment of this online PhD degree programs is through examination of the thesis portfolio by examiners external to JCU. The Professional Doctor of Health Professional Education is awarded to candidates whose research is deemed to have made an important contribution to knowledge and practice in their respective professional areas.
