The Professional Doctorate in Social Work (DISW) is designed for working professionals in the field of social work who want to earn an advanced research degree while still fulfilling their professional responsibilities. While comparable in rigor to a PhD award, the online PhD UK DISW is focused more on research towards improving practice in the profession rather than academic research that makes a significant contribution to knowledge in the field.
Applicants for the online PhD UK DISW should be practicing social workers with a Masters in social work or a related field (or possess an equivalent qualification) and two years relevant work experience. During the first year of the intensive five year program, candidates will take four taught modules followed in the second year by a year-long module during which they will prepare for their doctoral thesis while completing a 15,000-word literature review dissertation. The remainder of the DISW program will be devoted to completion of the 40,000 to 60,000-word thesis (including the literature review) under the guidance of thesis supervisors assigned by the department.
Studying for the taught component of the online PhD UK DISW program requires students to attend four to five-day on-campus study sessions which will provide them with the opportunity to network with fellow scholars who have similar research interests as well as academics with experience in various specialized subject areas.
