Edith Cowan University (ECU) gained university status in 1991 and since then it is known for its multi-disciplinary courses and vibrant research culture. The ECU believes in rewarding the achievement of students through scholarships. The PhD scholarships are designed for students facing financial hardships, rural students, disable students, international students and indigenous students. The scholarships present are as follows:
- Endeavor Postgraduate Awards DEEWR – it is a merit based scholarship program by Australian Government. The scholarships are managed by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. Students from Asia-pacific, Middle East, Europe and America are eligible to apply. The value of the award is $AUD173500. The scholarship is awarded for 3 years. The closing date for the submission of application is 30th June 2012. The scholarship will be awarded to candidate with high academic achievement and the relevance of the research proposal submitted along with the application form.
- Endeavor International Post Graduate Research Scholarship –the scholarship covers the tuition fee, health care cover and an annual stipend of $AUD25000. The opening date for the application is 1st June 2012 and closing date is 31st August 2012. The scholarship is awarded to student with excellent academic career.

- Recreational Fisheries PhD Scholarships – The Department of Fisheries at the University in collaboration with the RecFishWest offer 2 PhD scholarships. Students working on the aspects of spatial modeling and integration of spatial data are eligible to apply. The candidates will have the opportunity to research on recreational fishery management issues. The last to apply for the scholarship is 14th May 2012. The value of the scholarship is $AUD25000. The students must have experience in quantitative statistics and modeling.
- Fullbright Scholarships – the Australian and American Fullbright commission supports the educational exchange between Australia and America through these scholarships. The value of the award varies from $AUD30000 -$AUD64000. It is also open to professionals and senior scholars. The applications are invited from 1st June 2012 and the last date to apply is 31st August 2012.
- 4 PhD scholarship program are also available at the University. The scholarship is funded by the Collaborative Research Network and the Center for Marine Ecosystems Research. 2 positions are available for the Eco-hydraulics project. 1 for Seagrass genetics and 1 for Microbial processing. The candidates must have experience working in near shore marine ecosystems. For the genetics and microbial project candidates must have scuba and small boat handling experience together with a driving license. The value of the scholarship is $AUD25000 plus a top-up of $5000.
Besides these scholarships domestic students undertaking research in Cancer and Palliative care may also apply for the research scholarship. PhD scholarship program in the University is a way of providing support to bright students. There are various external scholarships also present in the university to help and encourage students.
