Sheffield Hallam University began in 1843 as the Sheffield School of Art and Design. It was the top school of this nature for over a century and in the mid 1900’s merged with the College of Technology, broadening its academic offerings. Through many mergers and acquisitions the school continued to grow and excel and earned the title University in 1992. With the right given to award degrees, Sheffield Hallam has continued to grow and now offers online PhD degrees
The online PhD degree offered by Sheffield Hallam is a split site degree program. This allows the student to pursue the degree while working in the field as well as attending University. It is also an important option for those candidates who want to do their PhD from a UK university but are mainly based in their home country (doing a full-time job or want be to based in home country for costs reasons). With this current registration option they will spend most of their time at their home country and some time studying at the University.
TO qualify for this program you must have a masters degree from a UK university or the equivalent from another university. If you have attended school outside of the UK you will need to have your school records reviewed prior to admission. You must also have a good command of the English language. If English is not your first language, there are courses offered to help you learn the language prior to admission.
During the study time at university, you will be required to attend some classes or seminars on campus throughout the program. These classes are designed to help you through your independent research as well as prepare you for your final thesis. Also, at the beginning of your program you will be assigned two people from the University to assist you with your course work. These individuals will help you create and follow a study plan enabling you to meet the deadlines of the course requirement. The courses are set so that you can complete the online PhD program in four years if attending full time or seven years if attending part time.
