By onlinephd |
With our blog of Online PhD UK, today’s topic is mainly related about a Manchester based UK university, offering a split-site PhD degree program for international candidates.
University of Salford – Background
Salford University’s beginnings date back to 1896, when Salford Working Men’s College merged with Pendleton Mechanics Institute, forming Salford Technical Institute. Upon being granted royal assent, the name was changed to Royal Technical Institute. The Institute offered courses in nine areas originally: art, domestic, dyeing, spinning and weaving, building, electrical engineering and applied physics, chemistry, engineering, and mathematics. With only 19 staff members, the Institute had 1,240 students for its first session.
The Institute was renamed Royal Technical College, in 1921. Thirty-seven years later, it was divided into two separate parts – the Royal College of Advanced Technology would go on to become the University of Salford, in 1967. The second part was Peel Park Technical College, which would eventually re-merge with its other half and join the University of Salford, in 1996. Today, the University has four campuses with 12 schools, 20,000 students, and 2,500 staff members. Salford is ranked in the United Kingdom’s top ten, with more than 93% of their postgraduate students employed or going on to continued education, within six months of their graduation.

Along with their traditional PhD research degree program, Salford University also offers distance/split-site PhD degree programs for international students. This is a split-site program that is 100% research based. Through this program, candidates are able to undertake part of their program at an external institution. However, candidates must spend at least one third of their study duration at Salford University. On rare occasions, a candidate may spend the entire period of study away from the University, waiving the compulsory Salford University attendance requirement).
However, this must be at the recommendation of the candidate’s supervisor and the available facilities must be adequate for both the student and the Salford supervisor. It is important to point out that the key supervisor for this research will be appointed by the Salford University. However an advisor (from an external institution) will also be allowed for constant guidance.
Admission Requirements
To get the admission into this PhD Program, you are required to submit a Research proposal on the subject. The Proposal should include a working title, introduction about the subject, proposed hypothesis, suggested literature and proposed research methodology with a list of references.
