Texas Woman’s University (TWU) is the largest state-supported university for women in the United States. TWU’s College of Nursing is the largest in Texas and the fifth largest in the country. The University was founded in 1901 following the act of the Texas Legislature as the Girls Industrial College. It was also historically known as the College of the Industrial Arts and Texas State College for Women.

Texas Woman’s University – Distance PhDs
TWU’s College of Nursing’s doctoral program started in 1971 and was the first doctoral program in nursing in the Southwest. To date, an estimate of 425 students have graduated from the program and are now positioned as professionals throughout the country. It is important to mention that TWU is currently offering two PhD degree programs for Nursing; Doctoral Program in Nursing Science (PhD) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). However distance PhD program is only available for Nursing Science. With the emphasis on research and areas focusing on women’s health, TWU’s PhD Degree Program in Nursing Science is offered at the Denton Campus and Houston Center while the Doctor of Nursing Practice is only offered at the Dallas Center.
Texas Woman’s University – Entry Requirement
As an entry requirement for distance PhD program in Nursing Science, you need a master’s degree in related subject area (a major in nursing) from a recognized university. As prior qualifications, you need a course in statistics and a graduate level course in research. You also need to submit recent GRE scores or Miller Analogies Test with two letters of recommendations, a personal statement about research interests and professional goals, a current license to practice professional nursing in the USA and recent and updated CV. Admission applications can be submitted during three academic periods – Fall (till 1st of May), Spring (till 15th of September) and in Summer (till 1st of February).
Course Outline and Procedure :
The current PhD program requires 60 semester hours (post master’s credits) to complete this degree. The course needs to be completed in various parts: Major (30 hours plus dissertation), Free Electives (18 hours), Women’s Health Elective (3 hours) and Education Elective (3 hours). At this initial point of admission process, an advisor will be allocated for further guidance and help. The first stage will be initiated by planning for first twelve hours of course work. With successful completion of this initial stage, an advisory committee (with three members) will be formed. To determine the real progress towards PhD degree, next stage will be a preliminary examination.
After the successful completion of all required courses and preliminary exam, student will pursue for a PhD research project and dissertation. Student will continue to receive constant guidance from a chairperson and two additional committee members. With dissertation submission, the last stage of this course will be a final oral examination. It is important to point out that nurses who obtain this degree from Texas Woman’s University will also be able to teach and mentor other nurses and nurse scholars.
