Online PhD Degree Programs – Grand Canyon University

Grand Canyon University is a faith-based educational institution for higher learning that offers both online and campus-based education. It was founded in 1949 as a non-profit institution to serve the needs of Arizona Southern Baptists in earning a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree without having to travel to Baptist colleges in Texas, Missouri or Oklahoma. After suffering a period of financial hardship, GCU was sold to the California-based company Significant Education, making it the first Christian college in the US to be operated on a for-profit basis.
Online PhD degree programs do not have classes at fixed times, but require students to log-in at least four times a week and meet assignment deadlines and other requirements for interaction with teachers and fellow students. Students take two courses per semester, which consists of sixteen weeks, divided into two parts of eight weeks each. While there are exams which are given electronically, most courses use alternate methods of assessing a student’s progress, such as research papers, projects and portfolios. Degrees can generally be completed within 18 to 24 months, based on a course load of 6 credits hours a semester.
GCU has five online PhD degree programs offering Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership degrees with emphasis on Effective Schools, Behavioral Health, Higher Education Leadership, Instructional Leadership and Organizational Development.
To be admitted to online PhD degree programs in Education, candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited university, at least two years of work experience, a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher and possess either a current state-accredited teaching credential or be qualified for certification.
