Online PhD Degree Programs – Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing

The Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing grew out of a need for more qualified nurse-midwives to service America’s underserved frontier areas. To find qualified professionals, the Frontier Nursing Service would either have to send American nurses to Great Britain to receive training or recruit British nurses to come to the US. When World War II broke out, British nurses were forced to return home while American nurses could no longer travel abroad to train. This prompted the FNS to found the Frontier Graduate School of Midwifery in 1939; the name was changed to FSMFM after the Family Nurse Practitioner program was added.
The School’s course offerings include Master of Science in Nursing, Post Masters Completion courses and online PhD degree programs that offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. To qualify for the DNP program, candidates must be registered nurses who have a Master of Science Degree in Nursing and are certified nationally as a Nurse-Midwife, Women’s Health Nurse or Family Nurse Practitioner. The curriculum is delivered through distance learning methods over the course of five terms of twelve weeks each.
Other admissions requirements for DNP online PhD degree programs include a cumulative GPA of 3.5 (as confirmed by transcripts of post-high school education); three letters of reference; curriculum vitae; submission of a statement of the candidate’s goals for their doctorate project, which should define ways to improve current clinical practice, have a positive impact on the current health care system or enhance health care delivery for underserved populations and rural communities.
Candidates for DNP online PhD degree programs must also come in for a personal interview (if all other criteria have been fulfilled) with the admissions committee and undergo a physical examination that will certify they are free of communicable tuberculosis and immune to Rubella and Hepatitis B.
