PhD Scholarships – University of Waikato New Zealand

The University of Waikato is one of the top universities of New Zealand. More than 13000 students from all over the world enroll in its courses each year. The PhD scholarships offered at the Waikato University are specially designed for many students groups, adult students, secondary school leavers and Maori students etc. The schools and departments of the University have their own research centers and units. These units and centers perform their own research and encourage students in their research degrees. The departments which offer PhD scholarships are:

- Computing and Mathematical Sciences

The University of Waikato offers special PhD scholarships for its international students. The students who are not resident of New Zealand and Australia may apply for the University Of Waikato International Doctoral Scholarships. The eligibility criteria for the scholarship are that the students must have an excellent academic record with a minimum grade of A in his previous full-time or part-time courses. The candidate must have the approval of the Post Graduate studies Committee of the University to pursue PhD, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Juridical Science or doctor of Musical Arts. The support of an academic staff of the University and 2 referee reports is also needed at the time of application. The scholarship is awarded for the period of research that is 3 years and the value of the scholarship is $22000 per annum plus the tuition fees and a thesis preparation allowance of $400.
The other PhD scholarship programs in which the PhD students can apply are as follows:
- 50th Anniversary of Teacher Education Scholarships – These scholarships was established in 2010 to encourage students whose doctoral study is focused on teaching. The candidates are required to be qualified teachers to apply for these scholarships. This scholarship is available for local students only. The value of the scholarship is $4000 granted for 1 year. Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarship awards.
- Acorn Foundation Scholarships – These scholarships are supported by a charitable trust. The University offers 2 Acorn scholarships each year. The value of the scholarship is $3000 per annum for 1 year. The scholarship is open for adult students studying at University of Waikato’s Tauranga Campus. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 31st August 2012.
- Allied Security Scholarships – The students enrolled in full-time PhD programs and residents of New Zealand are eligible to apply. The scholarship offers 6 awards of $500 annually, 3 in A semester and 3 in B semester. Applications are invited for the B semester scholarship and the last date is 13th July 2012.
- Bryant Post Graduate Research Scholarships – 1 scholarship is awarded each year. The value of the scholarship is $22000 per annum. The scholarship is awarded for 3 years.
- Bryant Residential tutorship – The students awarded with the scholarship will be required to offer formal teaching assistance in area of his expertise. The value of the tutorship is $3500 per annum for 1 year.
- Chamber of Commerce Tauranga Business Scholarships – The scholarships were established to support students from Tauranga Chamber of Commerce to undertake research in Business studies. The value of the scholarship covers the tuition fees for the first year. The closing date is 30th November 2012.
- Evelyn Stokes Memorial Doctoral Scholarship – Students pursuing research in Geography, Tourism and Environmental Planning programs are eligible to apply for the scholarship. The value of the scholarship is $5000 per annum tenable for 3 years. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 31st October.
- Flower Doctoral Fellowship in Economics – students enrolled in full-time economics PhD program at the university may apply for the scholarship. The value of fellowship is $30000 per annum, a thesis preparation allowance of $400 is also available.
- Freemasons Scholarships – There are 8 PhD scholarship program offered by the University. The value of the scholarship is $10000 per annum. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 1st October 2012.
- Hilary Jolly Memorial Scholarships – Full-time students studying in the field of Freshwater Ecology. The scholarship is open to both the domestic and the international students. The scholarship covers the tuition fee, thesis preparation fees of $500 and an annual stipend of $15000 per year tenable for 2 years.
- HOPE Foundation Scholarship in Ageing Research – the HOPE foundation offers these PhD scholarship programs to students who contribute in research related to ageing. The value of the scholarship is $6000 annually tenable for 3years. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 31st October 2012.
- NIDEA PhD Scholarship – 1 scholarship is available for student pursuing research in the field of health, mortality or epidemiology with New Zealand in focus. The value of scholarship is $28500 for 3 years. The last date to apply for the scholarship is 30th June 2012.
- Post Graduate Scholarship in Social Enterprise – students enrolled in part-time or full-time courses in Waikato management school are eligible to apply. The scholarship is available in two semesters and the last date to apply for the B semester scholarship is 20th July 2012. The number of scholarships awarded varies each year.
- Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarships – The last date to apply is 31st October 2012. It is open to local and international students. The scholarship covers the tuition fees at base rate.
There are many other PhD scholarship programs offered by the University to support students financially. The selection of the candidate for the scholarship is made by an academic panel comprising of members of various schools and departments of the University. The selection is made purely on academic excellence of student.
