Founded in 1891, the Faculty of Music at the University of Melbourne is the oldest music school in Australia, offering a select group of students the opportunity to avail of some of the best music education in the world. The Professional Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) is a research degree designed for professional performers who have already established successful careers in their respective fields. DMA online PhD degree programs involve the advanced study of music performance complimented by scholarly research. Duration of the program is equivalent to three years of full-time work.
Entry to DMA online PhD degree programs is open to candidates who possess a Masters of Music in performance or the equivalent qualification; applicants should normally also have completed a minor Masters-level research project or thesis and have taken a Musicology Research Methods subject. Applicants will also be required to prepare a 60-minute audition at the appropriate performance level and submit a complete repertoire list including concerto and chamber music. The DMA has coursework, research and performance components. Assessment for the award of the DMA requires the student to submit a written thesis and a Music Literature Survey as well as giving a performance at concern platform level and a Lecture Recital on the topic of his or her thesis.
Graduates from DMA online PhD degree programs are expected to become leaders in the interpretation of music for their instrument’s repertoire at the highest level of performance. They should also be able to function successfully as teacher-performers in higher education institutions.
