NEW – Graduate Teaching Assistantships Scholarships at University of Kent for 2014-15

The University of Kent also known as the University of Kent at Canterbury, finds its roots in Kent, United Kingdom as a public research university. The university was founded in 1965 when overpopulation in a number of local schools caused the Education Committee of Kent County Council unanimously voted to create a new university to help with overcrowding. They decided upon a place close to Canterbury because of the areas rich historical background as well as an area that overlapped the line between Canterbury and the county of Kent. Over the years the university has been witness to many changes and is ever expanding. The University of Kent has many outreach areas as well as draws in a large crowd of PhD candidates which causes the need for PhD scholarships to increase.

One group of PhD scholarships or post graduate scholarships are the Graduate Teaching Assistantships, normally abbreviated GTAs. The GTAs are a postgraduate scholarship program meant for research students. The goal of the GTAs are to allow research students to receive the financial support they need to return for teaching. The recipients of the scholarships hold exceptional positions in the school, where they are both students receiving a scholarship as well as employees of the school. Because of this unique position recipients are required to follow a strict amount of terms and conditions in order to maintain their assistantships. The GTAs like many other PhD scholarships covers a combination of maintenance grant as well as a salary. The individual amounts received by recipients of a GTA are dependent on the terms and conditions that they agreed to when signing on to the assistantships. Normally GTAs give a salary of £3,387.84 yearly. Recipients of the scholarships may negotiate more rates that can vary from a few pounds as well as combining the maintenance grant and salary to a rate that usually does not exceed £13,726 yearly in addition to tuition fees being waved and living allowances granted.

The University of Kent also offers other avenues for PhD scholarships. The University of Kent is proud to be a member of the South East Doctoral Training Center or SEDTC. The SEDTC offers a large variety of scholarships all funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. The University of Kent also receives funding from European Union Erasmus Mundus which funds the Doctorate in Cultural and Global Criminology or the DCGC. In the coming months the university will be awarding postgraduate scholarships. The scholarships will include yearly maintenance allowance of £13,726 as well as a standard living allowance of £3,900. Promising candidates must have obtained an MA or MSc at an academically distinct level. Successful applicants will also find that their scholarships involve a GTA which requires successful candidates to undertake small amounts of teaching.

Please note that deadline for all applications is 16.00 on Tuesday 6 May 2014.
