International PhD Scholarships from University of Newcastle Australia for 2014-15

University of Newcastle is an Australian public university that was established in 1965. The main campus for the university is located in Callaghan, Newcastle, New South Wales though the university does operate through other campuses. The campus boasts memberships to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business as well as a membership in the Innovative Research Universities. The school saw its beginnings under the authority of what was then known as the University of Technology New South Wales but what we know today as the University of New South Wales. At the time of establishment the university had few full time students and was only able to offer study in mathematics, sciences, and engineering. Under the University of Newcastle Act 1964 the university finally became autonomous. Since that time the University of Newcastle has joined the ranks as one of the world’s best universities and offers a diverse student life that hosts international students from over 115 different countries.

With the University of Newcastle being one of the leading universities it attracts many different students in need of PhD scholarships or other postgraduate financial aid. Two categories that we are going to look at today are the International Postgraduates Research Scholarship or IPRS and the University of Newcastle International Postgraduates Research Scholarships or UNIPRS.

The first one we are going to look at is the International Postgraduates Research Scholarship or IPRS. The IPRS is offered from the Australian Government specifically the Department of Industry to help financial aid international students that are wishing to participate in elite research programs at the university. The IPRS can be used as either a Master’s scholarship or PhD scholarships. Recipients of the scholarship are awarded either on a two year basis (for Master’s) or a three year basis (for doctoral) that provides living allowances in the amount of $25,392 as well as an additional thesis allowance and a relocation allowance. The IPRS is open for international students from any country except New Zealand, Australia, or to students who have obtained permanent residence in Australia. Candidates must be able to provide adequate evidence that they are proficient in English.

The other PhD scholarships available are the University of Newcastle International Postgraduates Research Scholarship or UNIPRS is offered through the university for international students. The UNIPRS provides waved tuition fees and in many cases certain departments will provide faculty funded research scholarships which provides an annual living allowance of $25,392 and covers the expense of health insurances mandatory for all international students to have. Just like IPRS the UNIPRS can be used on a two year basis for Master’s or for three year PhD scholarships. The UNIPRS is open for all international students regardless of country and is closed to residents of New Zealand, Australia, or to students who have gained permanent residency in Australia.
