The online PhD degree programs the candidate to complete 72 credit hours in the areas of Social Research (34 credits), Communications (12 credits), Philosophy (10 credits) and Integrative Issues (16 credits). The coursework is also inclusive of seven intensive week-long residencies at Oxford’s Tennessee campus, which will cover the core sessions of an Orientation Workshop (Core 1), Short-Term Residencies (Cores 2-6) and the Dissertation Core 7 when you begin the process of conducting your doctoral research, as well as tutorial-style distance learning instruction with assignments ranging in length from 30 days to 120 days. After completing the assignments, students return to campus for further cores; residencies can be scheduled around the student’s professional or vocational leave time. Online PhD degree programs typically take around four years to complete.

At the end of the program, the candidate is expected to have completed a dissertation of original Sociological research; since the degree is inter-disciplinary, the student is allowed to conduct research around a social issue in their profession. The degree is awarded after the candidate successfully defends the dissertation.

Candidates for joint online PhD degree programs must have a Master of Arts in Education or Master of Education with an A standing; however, applicants with lower academic qualifications but an outstanding record of professional experience may also be considered. Applicants must also submit a two to three page summary of their proposed area of research in one of the following fields of study – Policy and Leadership, Cognition and Learning and Socio-cultural Contexts of Education. Foreign students who have earned their qualifications from a non-English speaking university must also pass the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a grade of at least 600 or provide equivalent evidence of English proficiency.

The joint online PhD degree programs require the candidate, after the completion of coursework, to demonstrate their capacity as scholars through the successful completion of a comprehensive portfolio consisting of the dissertation research proposal and three other tasks before they can begin their dissertation research; they are also expected to defend their portfolio. Candidates are expected to complete the requirements for their degree within a minimum three year period but not to exceed six years.

The University’s School of Languages and Social Sciences offers online PhD UK research opportunities in the subject areas of Spanish, English, French, German, European Studies, Sociology and Translation Studies. During the first two years of the program, candidates will be required to undergo training in core Research Methods; depending on their past experience, the scholar may also be asked to take subject-specific courses from the subject areas of Forensic Linguistics, TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Applied Linguistics. The student must submit a qualifying report to be admitted to the PhD program proper. Once the candidate is admitted to the Applied Linguistics research program, they will enroll in Academic Preparation and complete a 60,000-word thesis. The PhD program will take 60 months in total to complete.

To qualify for the online PhD UK program, an applicant must have at least a first or second class Upper Level Honours degree or an equivalent qualification from a UK university or other higher education institution recognized by the admissions committee. They should also submit a brief essay outlining their proposed area of research.

Entry to the online PhD UK program requires applicants to have at least a first degree from a recognized university or professional qualifications accepted by the admissions committee. Successful candidates will initially be admitted to the Masters of Philosophy (MPhil) program and be allowed to enter the PhD program upon showing proof of adequate progress. If you have already have a Master by research or written examination you may be directly admitted to the program. The length of the program is at least 36 months for the MPhil and 48 months for the PhD.

The DBA program requires applicants to have a Master’s in Business Administration or other recognized qualification, and at least three years of relevant post-graduate work experience; candidates are also expected to have computer skills and access to the necessary hardware and software to conduct research and analysis. The DBA is completed in two stages, with the first stage consisting of coursework leading towards the submission of a research project proposal, and the second stage the supervised research and writing of the dissertation, along with other activities requiring brief on-campus residencies, such as cohort seminars and seminar presentations. Candidates are expected to complete the program in a minimum of 48 months or a maximum of 72 months.

Applicants to the program are expected to write a short research proposal of around 500 words to allow the Department to identify potential thesis advisers; international students are also welcome to apply to online PhD UK programs. The research proposal should be in one of the Department’s research interests, which include Sociology of Science, Youth and Popular Culture, Computer Simulation of Social Research and Aging and Gender. Doctoral students will be provided two advisers who will guide them in their research work through regular supervision.

The doctoral candidates are expected to produce, based on their original research, a dissertation which significantly contributes to the greater understanding of the body of knowledge in the subject area. Online PhD UK candidates are expected to complete the dissertation within four years from the time of enrollment, and be available on-campus to defend it though an oral defense.

Research proposals from online PhD UK candidates are expected to be within the following general research themes: international finance, development economics, economic thought, labor economics, health economics and European integration. Applicants to the program must hold at least a Master of Arts in Economics, or an equivalent qualification, from a UK university or other recognized higher education institution. If the applicant does not have the required prerequisites, they are asked to enroll in a Masters of Philosophy (MPhil) program first.

Doctoral students are expected to produce a research paper consisting of an original investigation that leads to a deeper understanding of the subject area. The college will also provide them with advisers who will guide them through the research process.

The paper is expected to be submitted within 72 months from the time the scholar enrolled in the online PhD UK program. They are also expected to be available for brief on-campus residencies during which they will consult with thesis advisers; they must also be on campus to orally defend their dissertation.

Online PhD UK English programs in the University are offered under the Faculty of Arts, a specialized campus that offers courses in a wide range of disciplines. Candidates for a PhD in English are expected to have at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree, or equivalent qualification, although a Master of Arts in a related field would be preferred. Potential research areas for English doctoral candidates include Poetry, Performance and American or Irish Women’s Writing.

Research students are initially registered under the Masters of Philosophy (MPhil) program or as a probationary PhD candidate, with the option to upgrade to full doctoral status after a probationary period when the research project will undergo a rigorous review. The research output is a dissertation, no more than 100,000 words long, based on original research that contributes to a deeper understanding of the research topic. Online PhD UK students are expected be available for short campus residencies to consult with thesis advisers and to orally defend their dissertation after they have submitted it.

Prerequisites for entry into the research degree program include at least a Second Class Honours, Upper Division degree; a Master of Arts degree is preferred but not mandatory. The scholar, however, is expected to have some training in advanced research methods. The Doctor of Philosophy degree can be completed in four years on a full-time basis and 72 months for those in an online PhD UK program. The candidate is expected to research and write a dissertation of between 80,000 to 100,000 words consisting of original research that contributes significantly to the body of knowledge in the area of research.

Research proposals should be on the general subject themes of policy implementation and service provision in the areas of social services and youth, and community development in the fields of adult education, women’s studies, community work and complimentary therapies. Candidates are expected to periodically meet with thesis supervisors to discuss their progress; for online PhD UK students, this means brief campus residencies, inclusive of the final oral thesis defense.

Online PhD UK candidates for a research degree in Medical Imaging Sciences are expected to have at least a Second Class Honours, Upper Division Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field; however, applicants with a background in medical ultrasound or radiography may also be considered for entry into the program. If applicants lack the necessary qualifications, they may be asked to complete an MPhil (Master of Philosophy) degree before they are allowed to apply. The MPhil takes around 60 months to complete on a part-time distance learning basis while the PhD takes around 72 months.

While research candidates are encouraged to follow their own interests in submitting research project proposals, it is recommended that the proposals fall under the Department’s research specializations: equipment performance evaluation, patient experiences and medical image perception. The online PhD UK scholar should produce a dissertation of not more than 100,000 words and not less than 80,000 words consisting of original research which makes an important contribution to the body of knowledge in the research area, under the guidance of academic supervisors who will be assigned to the scholar by the College. Brief on-campus residencies may also be required for consultation with the supervisors and to defend the dissertation.

Candidates for the online PhD UK Health Science and Healing Studies programs are generally required to have a Master’s degree in a related field; otherwise, candidates are advised to enroll for a Master’s of Philosophy (MPhil) in a relevant subject area at the College before they can enter the program. They are also expected to have some research training or applicable professional experience in biomedical science or health care provision. An MPhil will take around 60 months to complete on a part-time distance learning basis, while a PhD is expected to be completed in a maximum of six years.

Doctoral scholars are expected to research and write a dissertation of 80,000 to 100,000 words (word count inclusive of footnotes and appendices) consisting of original research that makes a significant contribution to the subject area; the project will be conducted under the guidance of thesis supervisors assigned by the University.
