It was initially established as the Hartley Institution in 1862 until it was given a full university status in 1952. The institution has over eight faculties to cater to students and aspiring doctorates. Each can offer PhD scholarships that students can apply to.

There are 18 PhD scholarships that students can take advantage of at the University of Southampton. They are open to aspiring students from any part of the world as an initiative to increase the number of postgraduate learners of the school. Soton grants scholarships to the best student applicants that can excel on their chosen field continuously throughout the duration of their courses.
The scholarships are designed to be flexible in order to accommodate full time and part time students. Each has the ability to fully fund courses of 100 qualified students. The number of awardees receiving the £13,000 to £14,000 funding may be less depending on the quality of applicants and the willingness of non-EU students to pay overseas fees and costs.
Requirements:
Applicants interested in receiving a full funding from the university must have:
- A minimum first degree of the discipline or its equivalent such as a lower second class honors degree with an MSc.
- A grade C for Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency or a 6.5 in IELTS
- Enthusiasm for an undergraduate project
- Relevant experience relating to the area of study
- An extensive research, laboratory and fieldwork in the study
- Two academic references

Deadlines
Applications are expected to be made at the applicant’s earliest convenience. Unless otherwise stated, most of the scholarships take applications throughout the academic year. This is until slots for the awardees have been filled satisfactorily. In some cases, applicants are required to submit their application before the first month of the year.
