12 PhD Scholarships at Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology Netherlands

The Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology or ICS is one of the best research centers as well as graduate school for social sciences that the Netherlands has to offer. The ICS was established in 1986 after receiving accreditation from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. The school was selected in 2009 by Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research or the NWO and is one out of nine schools in all the Dutch universities that have a graduate NWO programme.

The ICS is a combined effort of three different Dutch universities, the University of Utrecht, University of Groningen, and the Radboud University of Nijmegen. ICS derives its faculty mainly from the Department of Sociology at these three individual universities. The faculty works with over 60 PhD pupils in a variety of research programs. PhD scholarships are increasingly competitive based and every year ICS selects 10-12 exceedingly gifted students whether they are Dutch or are attending as international students, to receive fully funded PhD scholarships that cover a large variety of expenses such as living expenses, research expenses, and tuition. The recipients must be educated in some form of social science such as economics and sociology. Graduates of Statistics and Mathematics are also encouraged invited to apply for the PhD scholarships.

PhD applicants are required to participate in a highly structured three to four year program that covers research methods in social sciences as well as theory construction. The goal of the rigorous program is to enable the students to meet the high demands needed for social researchers around the world. Every recipient is given an appointment for one year. At the end of the year a formal evaluation is completed going over everything that the recipient has accomplished in the year. If the evaluation is positive the scholarship is then extended to the full four years maximum. If the evaluation comes back poorly then the recipient will lose their scholarship if not their place in the school. The scholarship covers a large amount of expenses and awards close to € 2083 pre-taxes in the first year in the program. After the first year is completed and the scholarship has been extended the amount awarded rises to € 2664 pre-taxes. The salary also has additional 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end of the year bonus for each successful year in the program. There are also additional accommodations made for pension schemes, flexible employment, and partially paid parental leave as well as tuition fees completely waved.

Applications can be submitted online. Students should be prepared to demonstrate their academic excellence. Applicants’ profiles and portfolios will be reviewed and promising candidates will receive an invitation to interview.
